ERASE

Laser tattoo removal is a process, and every person’s skin and body responds differently. Your preparation, aftercare and the time you allow between treatments all play an important role in your overall results.

What is laser tattoo removal?

Laser tattoo removal works by delivering highly concentrated pulses of laser energy into the tattoo or permanent makeup pigment. The laser energy targets the pigment and breaks it down into smaller particles, which your body can then gradually process and clear through its natural systems. The process is gradual, and multiple treatments are usually required. The number of sessions you’ll need will depend on factors including the pigment used, colour, depth and density of the ink, the age and location of the tattoo, your skin type and your individual response to treatment.

Your body does the clearing - the laser simply starts the process.

A note about lip PMU removal

If you are having laser removal of permanent makeup from the lips and have ever experienced cold sores, please let us know before your appointment.

Laser treatment around the lips can trigger a cold sore outbreak in those who are susceptible. Antiviral medication may be recommended before and after treatment, so please speak to us at least 7 days before your appointment so we can advise you appropriately.

Health & medication

Please make sure we are aware of any relevant medical or skin conditions, as well as any current or previous medications or treatments.

Certain medications - including Roaccutane, St John’s Wort and medications containing gold - may mean that treatment is not suitable or may need to be postponed.

If you are unsure whether a medication, medical condition or previous treatment may affect your eligibility, please contact us before your appointment.

Please do not stop taking any prescribed medication without first consulting your doctor.

in the run up

pre care

PREPARING FOR YOUR LASER APPOINTMENT

If you are having laser removal of permanent makeup from the lips and have ever experienced a cold sore, please let us know before your appointment. Laser treatment around the lips can trigger an outbreak in those who are susceptible. Please speak to your practitioner at least 7 days before treatment so that appropriate antiviral treatment can be discussed with your GP or healthcare professional if required.

Most importantly - ensure the area to be treated isn't tanned or burnt!

aftercare

LOOKING AFTER YOUR TREATMENT AREA

What to expect immediately after your treatment

Your skin may respond in a number of ways following laser treatment. Immediately after your appointment, you may experience:

  • Redness

  • Swelling

  • Tenderness

  • Frosting - a temporary whitening of the treated area.

As your skin begins to heal, you may notice:

  • Dryness

  • Itching

  • Flaking

  • Darkening of the pigment

  • Scabbing or crusting

As your removal journey progresses, you may also experience bruising or blistering. These responses can be a normal part of the treatment and healing process, although everyone responds differently.

The healing process

Dont panic if you dont see an immediate change

Once the initial frosting has settled, the pigment may look:

  • Much the same as before

  • Darker

  • Lighter

  • Less intense

The laser has started the process, but your body now needs time to do the clearing. The fragmented pigment can continue to be processed by your body for weeks and months after treatment, with the process potentially continuing for up to 12 months. The visible results will develop gradually. Laser tattoo removal is a process, not an instant result. Hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation can occur following laser treatment, and UV exposure can increase the risk of pigmentation changes.

The first 72h

Keep it clean. Keep it cool.

Keep the treatment area clean and dry.

  • Brief showers are fine, but avoid soaking the area.

  • Do not allow hot water to run directly over the treated skin.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise and excessive sweating.

  • Avoid activities that create excessive heat or friction around the treatment area.

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing where possible.

  • Apply a thin layer of aloe vera gel if recommended or required for comfort.

Cooling tip

If using an ice pack:

  • Always wrap it in a clean cloth.

  • Never place ice directly onto the treated skin.

  • Apply for no more than 15–20 minutes at a time.

  • Allow the skin to return to its normal temperature before reapplying - typically at least 40–60 minutes between applications.

After 72h

Support your skin and body

Once the initial tenderness has subsided, typically after around 72 hours, you can begin gently massaging the area towards the nearest lymph nodes. Use a gentle moisturiser and avoid massaging if the skin is still particularly tender, blistered, scabbed or otherwise not ready. The aim is to support circulation and lymphatic drainage while your body continues to process the fragmented pigment.

Be gentle. Your skin is still healing.

For the first 14 days, or until fully healed

Please avoid:

  • Saunas

  • Steam rooms

  • Hot tubs

  • Swimming pools

  • Open water

  • Excessive heat

  • Excessive sweating

  • Picking or scratching at scabs, flakes or blisters

  • Exfoliating products

  • Active skincare ingredients

  • Rough towels

  • Abrasive clothing

  • Makeup on the treated area

  • Fake tan

  • Fragranced products

  • Unrecommended creams or products

  • Hair removal or cosmetic treatments in the area

Do not apply anything to the treatment area unless specifically recommended by your practitioner.

Allow any scabs, flakes or crusting to come away naturally. Picking can interfere with healing, affect pigment clearance and increase the risk of scarring.

Comfort and pain relief

If you experience discomfort following treatment, paracetamol may be taken. If the area is particularly itchy then antihistamine tablets may help, if these are suitable for you and you have not been advised otherwise by your GP or healthcare professional. Avoid aspirin unless specifically advised by a medical professional.

Lower leg and foot treatments need a little extra care

If you’re having laser treatment on your lower leg or foot:

  • Elevate the limb where possible during the first few days to help reduce swelling.

  • Avoid footwear that rubs or presses against the treated area.

  • Continue to elevate the limb where possible while swelling or tenderness is present.

  • Once tenderness has settled, gentle lymphatic massage can be introduced as advised by your practitioner.

  • Take extra care to avoid friction or pressure that could disturb healing skin.

Supporting your removal journey - your body does the clearing

Laser breaks the pigment down into smaller particles. Your body then works to process and clear those particles over time. You can support your body’s natural healing and recovery by:

  • Staying well hydrated

  • Eating a balanced, nutritious diet

  • Getting plenty of rest

  • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle

Your immune and lymphatic systems play an important role in the removal process, so looking after yourself between treatments is part of your journey too.

Long-term care - protect your progress

Avoid direct sun exposure and sunbeds for at least 4 weeks following treatment.

The treatment area must also remain free from an active tan for at least 6 weeks before your next appointment.

We cannot safely treat recently tanned or sun-exposed skin due to the increased risk of burns and pigmentation changes. Once the skin has fully healed, apply SPF 50+ to the treatment area whenever it is exposed to sunlight. UV exposure can increase the risk of pigmentation changes and can affect the appearance of the skin during your removal journey.

Your next treatment - patience is part of the process

Laser tattoo removal requires multiple treatments.

Your first full treatment session can take place a minimum of 7 days after your patch test.

Subsequent treatment sessions must be at least 6 weeks apart, although this interval may increase as your removal journey progresses.

This time between sessions allows your skin to heal and your body to continue processing and clearing the fragmented pigment. More treatments don’t necessarily mean faster results. Giving your skin and body enough time between sessions is an important part of achieving the best possible outcome.

What if you need a break between treatments?

That’s completely fine, and often GOOD!

Your removal journey doesn’t have to follow a rigid schedule.

Your body continues to process pigment between appointments, so longer intervals between treatments may sometimes be appropriate - and may even be recommended as your removal journey progresses. Your practitioner will advise you on the most suitable treatment schedule for your skin and individual response.

Signs to look out for and when to seek medical advice

Some redness, swelling, warmth and tenderness can be expected following treatment. However, please contact your practitioner and seek medical advice from your GP or NHS 111 if you experience:

  • Increasing redness or swelling after the initial healing period

  • Excessive heat in the treatment area

  • Worsening or increasing pain

  • Pus or unusual discharge

  • Other signs that concern you

These may indicate an infection or another complication that requires medical assessment.

If you are ever unsure about your healing, please get in touch with your practitioner.

Trust the process

Laser tattoo removal isn’t about rushing your skin.

It’s about using the right treatment, at the right time, while giving your body the time it needs to do its part.

The laser breaks the pigment down.

Your body clears it away.

Your patience allows the process to work.

  • Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, but each ‘shot’ of laser tattoo removal is often described as feeling like a quick hot oil splash or the flick of an elastic band against the skin.

The good news? The treatment is very quick, and we use a Zimmer 6 cryo skin cooler throughout your appointment to continuously cool the skin and make the experience significantly more comfortable.

You will still feel the laser - we never want to promise a completely pain-free treatment - but the cooling helps to take the edge off the sensation, making it much more manageable. For most clients, the actual laser pulses are over surprisingly quickly, and the cooling continues afterwards to help calm the skin.

Quick, controlled and considerably more comfortable with cryo cooling.

  • Your first full treatment can take place a minimum of 7 days after your patch test.

Subsequent treatments must then be at least 6 weeks apart.

As your removal journey progresses, you may be advised to leave longer between sessions to allow your body more time to process the remaining pigment.

Why can’t I have treatments closer together?

Your skin needs time to heal, but your body also needs time to process and clear the fragmented pigment.

Treating too frequently doesn’t necessarily speed up the removal process.

Patience is part of effective laser tattoo removal.

With larger gaps, clients generally find they have less sessions of laser removal vs going with the minimum required spacing.

  • Complete removal cannot be guaranteed. Some tattoos and pigments respond extremely well to laser, while others may be more resistant. Factors such as pigment type, colour, depth, density, age, location and your individual response all influence the outcome.

Lots of tattoos can be fully removed with plenty of time and patience. Sometimes we may need to combine treatments with a non ablative fractional laser, saline or glycolic removal, or recommend micro needling and use of topicals such as silicone strips and gel for best results

Our goal is to give you realistic expectations and a treatment plan tailored to you.

  • There is no universal number of sessions.

The number of treatments required depends on factors including the pigment colour, type and density, how deeply it was implanted, the age of the tattoo, its location, your skin and how your individual body responds.

Your practitioner will assess your tattoo and give you realistic expectations, but no ethical practitioner can guarantee a specific number of sessions or complete removal.

You can also receive a guide number of sessions by visiting the universal Kirby Desai Calculator here (please only take these as a rough guide, we generally find out clients require less treatments due to our technology and expertise)

  • Avoid strenuous exercise and excessive sweating during the first 72 hours. Heat, sweat and friction can irritate freshly treated skin, so give the area time to settle.

Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs and open water for the first 14 days, or until the area is fully healed.
